Kay Beacham
"My name is Kay Beacham and I grew up in Demorest, Habersham County, Georgia in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. My mom, dad and sister accompanied me to Clarkesville Square, the county seat, for my fourteenth birthday where I picked out my birthday present at Moulder’s Studio and dime store (my favorite establishment in the 1960’s). Mr. Moulder helped me choose an appropriate camera for my age; it was a Kodak Brownie complete with side flashbulb attachment and a free roll of film. My 12 year-old sister posed for me on the camera display case to have her picture taken. This first photo had a profound effect upon the rest of my life. I started taking pictures of everything in my neighborhood.
I attended the University of Georgia in the 1970’s, which explains my resolute fondness for English bulldogs, and might be the only student that ever attended football games specifically to see “UGA” the bulldog mascot run out onto the field. I also managed to earn Bachelor of Science and Masters Degrees in education and government at UGA.
My career choices have included being an agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a recreation director, and a Georgia prison system official. These demanding, political career choices made the soothing practice of photography even more important to me.
Forty-two years after my birthday visit to Moulder’s store in 1969, and several cameras later, I remain lost in the art of photography. My “eye” for a soothing scene and appreciation for nature’s perfect composition have grown over the years. Traveling throughout Georgia due to career paths has strengthened my appreciation for regional beauty in all parts of the state. I have never run out of interesting scenes and places to photograph.
It is my fondest hope that you find as much inner peace viewing my artwork as I experienced capturing it."
